Welcome to the Thursday seminar at the Centre for Gender Research. The Thursday seminars are a place where gender studies from different disciplines meet. OPEN FOR ALL! No registration required.

Critical Studies on Men and Masculinities (CSMM) have long been dominated by socialist feminist theoretical perspectives, particularly different interpretations of hegemony theory. I am interested in exploring what happens when other, perhaps more contemporary, feminist perspectives are used in studying masculinity.

Drawing on feminist theory in the intersection of poststructuralism and phenomenology, particularly the work of Sara Ahmed, I discuss findings from two studies in contemporary Sweden. The first concerns what I call ‘Books about men’, i.e. feminist men’s popular and political writing on men, masculinity and gender inequality, 2004-2015. The second study is an ongoing project about young men and intimate partner violence in cross-sex relationships. In both cases, I highlight the role of emotions and networks in understanding issues about men and masculinity.
